Random Loves Lately

1.  Starbucks You Are Here Collection Water Bottles

So I thought I'd combine some random things in this post lol.  They are kind of silly to be their own, so might as well be together!  =)  First of all, you may know that I am a big fan of the Starbucks You Are Here mug collection.  Every city I go to, I buy one.  Actually, I buy 2, just in case I break one so I have a back up.  =P  They are really good and useful souvenirs, I think!  In my New York trip post, I posted a picture of everyone I have so far.  I have since gotten the San Francisco one too.  I actually grew up in San Francisco, but that was way before my mug collection started.  My only rule for collecting these mugs is that the city has to be a place I've been to before.  I'm hesitant to even take them as gifts when friends bring them back from somewhere I haven't been to.  It's just not the same lol.

Anyway, so I was randomly browsing the Starbucks website (I do this sometimes) a couple weeks ago, and saw that they now have a limited edition You Are Here water bottle collection!  Omg.   They are only for sale for a limited time too.  Some of the cities are already sold out now.  They are so cute!  I immediately bought 2:  Seattle and San Francisco.

After I received them and realized how awesome they are in person, I had to get more!  They are made of glass, but not the super heavy kind.  They are long and skinny, so they are perfect to put in the cup holders in your car, or to stick in your gym bag.  The lid has a very convenient handle too.  But you do have to screw it off to drink out of it.

For the second round, I really wanted to get New York, but it was sold out already!  Sad face!!!  So I decided to get Las Vegas, and Washington DC.  Ok, I've never been to DC before.  But I have been admiring the DC design for years online.  I want to go to all the places with nice mug designs, so DC is on my list!  Lol!  Besides, my bf has been there before.  He said he'd use it.  So now we have 4 of these!  Taadaaaaa!  See how they are already being used too!  =D

I really don't care that I'm like a crazy person collecting water bottles.  I drink A LOT of water everyday, so I feel justified having many bottles to drink out of.  =)

2.  TOMS for Audi Shoes

The second item I got within the last week is the TOMS for Audi shoes.  I didn't buy them lol.  They were sent to me for free.  I guess they were a part of an Audi promotion, which stated that if you get an Audi car between certain dates then you get the shoes.  I didn't even know that when I got my car a couple months ago.

I have to say, I've always thought TOMS shoes were pretty ugly lol.  But I get that they have a good message and they give away a pair of shoes to a kid in need for every pair that they sell.  The Audi shoes are actually not bad at all though lol.  I do like the gray and red combo.

Look, they even have the Audi logo on the outside... lol!

I got these shoes in my regular size 6.  They are indeed very comfortable.  I've worn them around the neighborhood a couple times.  At first I thought I'd just keep them in my car as driving shoes, because who wants to walk around with Audi logo on their shoes lol.  I wear heels all the time, so it's probably a good idea to have some flat shoes in the car.  But these shoes are definitely growing on me as I wear them more.  I think comfortable things just have a way of growing on you.

3.  Lululemon What'SUP Hat

Yep, I got another Lululemon What'SUP Hat.  I haven't been buying anything from Lululemon lately.  This whole "Feeling" thing they've come out with is just creepy.  Definitely trying too hard.  Plus, what's up with the huge price hikes?  They've pretty much lost me unless I see a design I cannot live without, or find things on sale.  But I can't deny that I am a huge fan of this hat lol.  The latest one I got is in dottie dash, which I actually considered getting at full price.  But I put it off and then it went on sale for $19 last week!

The other 3 I have are all darker colors, so it's nice to have a light one.  I am actually very tempted to get the current dramatic static one.  But here are my 4 all together!

These hats are not super consistent in sizing though.  They are all one size, but the dottie dash by far fits the loosest.  The black one fits the tightest.  The star crushed ones fit pretty similar, somewhere in the middle.

What difference is visible on the outside is that the star crushed ones have a metal logo sewn onto the left side, and all mesh on the back:

Whereas the dottie dash and black ones have this little flap thing with the logo on it.  And the bottom band is not mesh:

All in all, not huge differences.  I don't really care how the logo is shown at all.  This hat just fits my head well.  I have a big head with a lot of hair.  This is the only Lululemon hat I've tried that actually fits my head.  They are great to wear while working out.  I've done cardio/conditioning, and weights in these hats.  They never slip off and they catch all my sweat lol.  So I'll keep buying them!

Christine Bullock's Evolution20 Workouts!

So about a month or so ago, I had mentioned that I took off 2 weeks from doing weights at the gym, and tried out my trainer friend Christine Bullock's workouts.  I am finally getting around to writing about it!  Her program is called Evolution20, and I think it's a very solid program.  It has ten 20-minute workouts that you are supposed to do for 60 days, broken down into 2 phases.  You do phase 1 for 30 days, then move onto phase 2 for the next 30 days.  Each phase has 5 workouts consisting of foundation, endurance, balance, power and agility.  The workouts are kind of self-explanatory, but endurance and power are more like cardio/conditioning type of workouts, balance consists of many yoga moves, and agility has dance moves.  Both phases also come with a bonus ab workout.  In her own words, the workouts consist of "high intensity drills, functional bodyweight training, pilates, stability, plyometrics, yoga, super-setting and more!"

I gotta say, I found the workouts to be really fun!  Obviously I didn't do them for 60 days, but I've taken some of the exercises I learned in her program and added to my regular rotation of conditioning exercises.  I am going to summarize what I like about her program, as well as what I think could improve.

What I Like:

1.   Christine is hot!  And she wears cute clothes so it's fun to watch lol.  This is kind of important right??

2.  Her program is well rounded, with both aerobic and anaerobic exercises - you will get bootcamp type of moves, yoga moves, boxing moves, dance moves... everything!  But she has a focus on functional full body movements which I really like.  She also provides alternatives for people with different fitness backgrounds.

3.  This might be the most important point - her exercises are interesting!  She tweaks well-known exercises and adds something different or extra to make them new and refreshing.  I've been working out for a long time, and I don't usually see a lot of new exercises now.  But she has some seriously great moves!  I don't want to give her workouts away, but think single-leg burpees, break dance push-ups, crab crunch, plank walks, runner sit-up, etc.!  I really did learn quite a few awesome new moves!

4.  All the workouts can be done anywhere without any equipments.  This is great for travel, or workout at home if you can't make it to the gym.  Or take it with you to the gym!  The videos come DVD form, online via any browser, or you can use an app called Uscreen on your phone or tablet.  That's quite convenient since that means you can watch them at the gym and workout alongside the videos!

5.  The program also comes with a meal plan.  It lists out each meal, and has a lot of recipes.

6.  The price of the program is $49.95 which I think is reasonable for all the workouts and recipes that you get to keep forever.

What I Would Improve:

1.  Although it's nice to be able to watch the workout videos at the gym, I do wish she would have provided a written copy of the exercises in each workout.  I think in a public space, it is easier to read rather than watch a video and attempt to workout at the same time.  You could TRY to remember all the exercises, but there are so many and most of the time they are supersets.  So it is a lot to remember.

2.  She doesn't tell you how many reps of each exercises to perform.  It's time based rather than rep based, I guess.  But I am a little OCD and I just want to know that I've performed the same number of reps on each side!

3.  This could also be my personal preference, but I don't find the "foundation" workout very interesting.  But of course I understand that it would probably be very useful for someone with less experience working out in the past.  For someone like me though, I kind of had to throw this workout out.  So instead of 5 workouts, I got 4.  My favorites 2 workouts are endurance and power.  Those are the conditioning supersets that I have incorporated into my current weight training routine as supplements.

Conclusion:

So in conclusion, I definitely think that this is a good program.  If you feel like adding something new to your workouts, or if you are looking for something to help you kickstart a fitness routine, I think this would be a great place to start.  Of course I can be a little biased since I know Christine and she is such a sweet person.  But I'd like to think I was being as objective as possible while trying out Evolution20.

There are trailers on the Evolution20 website for both phases if you are interested in exploring more.  You can also just get a power workout + nutritional sampler for $9.95.  Though if you ask me, I think $30 more for the whole program is a better deal.  =P

If you do decide to try out Evolution20, I would be very interested in your thoughts!  So please keep me posted on your progress!

Sunday Funday!

So I made big changes this week with my training program.  I finally stopped training with my online trainer.  While I learned a lot, and made a lot of progress (can be seen here) with him, I had been training with him for a year and a half and I felt I wasn't getting as much out of it anymore.  At least it's good to take a break and do something different for a while.  I am the kind of person that needs a plan in order to push myself.  That's partly why I stuck with him for so long.  I like his training program, and I like the biweekly check-ins with him so that I could hold myself more accountable.  I know that if I don't have a training program, I would just be lost at the gym.  At best, I would probably end up wandering around and not using my time effectively.  At worst, I wouldn't even feel like going to begin with.

So, this week I have started on the Get Glutes program with none other than the Glutes guy himself - Bret Contreras!  I've been subscribing to his blogs and videos for quite a while now, and I really like him.  I didn't know he had this program until my friend mentioned it to me.  Otherwise, I probably would have jumped on board sooner!  It's such a good deal too - it is $19 per month, or 18 months for $179 which is like $10 per month.  It's SO worth it!  He gives you a week's worth of strength and conditioning workouts each month.  You do the workouts for 4 weeks, then you get a revised workout plan for the next month.  For each exercise, there is a detailed video where him and his co-trainers show you how it should be done.  They also give you tons of other options if you are unable to do an exercise the way it is written, or don't have the equipment.  There is also a forum where you can ask the trainers and other members questions.

I've only done the first week's workouts, and I love it so far!  It's actually quite tough even though the number of sets/reps and frequency are lower than I was doing with my online coach.  For the first month, there are 3 strength workouts and 3 conditioning workouts.  You can workout anywhere from 1 or 2 times a week up to 6 times a week.  You can choose between the combination of strength and conditioning workouts.  I've opted to do 5 times a week so far, which would be strength 1, conditioning 1, strength 2, conditioning 2, and strength 3.  The strength workouts are full body workouts, although with emphasis on the glutes of course.  They take about an hour to complete, and the conditioning workouts take only 15-20 minutes.  So you could do the conditioning after strength, although it is not recommended.  They also don't really recommend that you do additional cardio on top of this program, since it is a strength building program.  I think I'll drop my 3 cardio sessions per week for now and see how it goes.  May add some back.  But I'm hoping the conditioning workouts are going to be enough.

This week I had a weird incident where I really strained my neck/shoulder muscle during chin-ups.  I don't even know how it happened.  I've been doing chin-ups and pull-ups for a long time, both negatives and assisted/unassisted versions.  So I don't know how I managed to strain my muscle this time during a regular unassisted chin-up.  It was pretty bad for about 2 days though.  I could barely turn my head without being in a lot of pain.  I did a lot of heat padding, and rolling the muscle out.  But it also took me out of commission for about 3 days.  Because of that, I didn't get back to the gym until this weekend and I combined strength and conditioning workouts on both days to make up for lost time.  I definitely don't plan to do that often!  I'm already very sore from yesterday's workout alone.

Monday 10/27 - Rest day

Tuesday 10/28
What I did:  The first strength workout.

What I wore:  Lululemon swiftly racerback in space dye fuel green with free to be bra in very green under.  Lululemon Mod Moves crop, and Nike Free 5.0 TR Fit 4 in venom/turbo green.

Splits59 Venus jacket as to and from:

Wednesday 10/29 - Rest day due to neck/shoulder strain

Thursday 10/30 - Rest day due to neck/shoulder strain.  It got way cooler here towards the end of the week (about time!) and I got to pull out my tights!  Lol.  I was excited, so here's what I wore to work:  Ann Taylor Mod Scarf print dress in river blue with Gabrielle Rossi cashmere one button blazer in navy over it, and Vince Camuto Dacoma pump in hurricane gray pearl patent.

Friday 10/31 - Rest day due to neck shoulder strain

Saturday 11/1
What I did:  Finally was able to get back to the gym!  I did my second strength workout, followed by the first conditioning workout.  Not gonna lie, but I was kind of done for the rest of the day.

What I wore:  Since it was so "cold" here, I pulled out my "winter tights" lol.  Lorna Jane Mosaic full length tight!  Worn with Lululemon Water Bound Singlet in bruised berry, and Lorna Jane Sunrise bra under it.  Nike Free 5.0 TR Fit 4 shoes in hyper cobalt/bright mango.

I liked that the laser cutout of the tank with the bra under it very much resembled the cut out details of the tights!

I wore my Nike Dri Fit Epic crew in deep night as to and from, but I actually kept it on for the first couple sets of my workout.  Then I got too hot.

I've been making good use of my Ann Taylor Drapey pants.  I wore them out on Saturday again after the gym, in full on fall mode!  With Gabrielle Rossi cashmere cross front sweater, as well as the Armani Exchange faux fur knit jacket and French Connection Maria wedge sneakers.

I love this cooler weather!  We even got a little rain on Halloween.  But unfortunately, I think it will be in the high 80s next week again.  =(

Sunday 11/2
What I did:  Last strength workout + conditioning workout.

Well, combining workouts means less outfits for this week!  So this is a rather short one.  Looking forward to experimenting with my new training program again next week.  But since I worked so hard yesterday and today, I am most looking forward to tomorrow being a rest day.  =P

Have a good night everyone!

Quest Protein Chips!

Hi everyone!  I'm going on vacation for the next 10 days, so I wanted to make this quick post about my newest find before I go.  It actually makes me quite excited lol.  I've been buying Questbars for a while - they are these all natural ingredient protein bars with high fiber!  (My favorite flavors are raspberry white chocolate and cookies 'n cream.)  But when I went on their site to order a replenishment last week, I saw that Quest now make protein chips!  I couldn't resist and ordered a box of the sea salt flavor.  They also come in cheddar & sour cream, and BBQ flavors.

They are actually not bad at all!  They are crunchy and taste like they are made of potato!  Each bag has 120 calories only, with 21g of protein, 1.5g of fat, and 5g of carbs!  Sodium is also pretty decent at 190mg.  Not bad at all!  Totally great for a snack and perfect for traveling.  I'm happy I got these right before my trip!  I can't wait to try out the other two flavors.  =)

Body Weight... Then and Now

Today's post is going to be a bit different than usual.  Partly because I haven't bought anything lately to write about... lol!  But seriously, I have been receiving many emails from different readers asking me for my body stats to pinpoint where they think they should set their goals at.  First of all, I am very honored that you feel that way!  But I've noticed a trend that I wanted to address.  One of the most common questions I get is how much I weigh.  I find this question hard to answer, because I weigh about the same today as I did a year and 4 months ago when I first started to really strength train with heavier weights.

You've probably read my "weight loss journey" on top of this page where I described how I used to look quite different.  I had lost weight fast by doing a lot of cardio and eating very little.  Then I went up and down for years, although never went quite as high as where I started.  Back in April 2013, I was at a point where I had kind of let myself go a little more than usual and I had noticed my weight creeping up and my clothes not fitting as well anymore.  That was when I knew I had to do something.  These pictures were taken right when I started training with my coach, and I weighed 133 pounds that day (I'm 5'5).  That was actually a light day for me.  Around that time, I had been seeing the numbers more in the 135-137 range.  So I could still hide my extra flab while wearing clothes, but it's a different story in a bathing suit!

I started lifting weights a lot more seriously (at least 4-5 days per week) while doing moderate cardio (3-4 days of 30 min per week).  I started seeing my body getting tighter and my weight dropped to around 126-128 for a good portion of last year.  I also went down a size in clothing.  But I was eating around 1550 calories a day and I just wasn't getting the muscle definition that I wanted.  My goal was always to add more muscle rather than being skinny.  So about 2 months ago, my coach and I decided to move me into the "building phase" and upped my calories to 2000 per day, with 220g of carbs!  I kept training hard, and I immediately started seeing more definition.  My weight did creep up slowly which was expected.  These pictures were taken last month, and I was the exact same weight as a year and 4 months ago - 133 pounds.  This is the range I'm hovering nowadays - 130-133 (sometimes higher if I have a cheat meal the day before).

So, as you can see, I have definitely leaned out and gotten toned up, and yet I weigh exactly the same!  Here are the two pictures side by side for better comparison:

Ok so I learned to pose a little better too from all the progress pictures I've had to take!  =P  But, you get the idea.

This is why it's hard for me to tell you just a number to aim for.  I think it's more important that you judge by how your clothes fit than what the scale says.  Usually when you gain muscle, your shoulders will get wider in relation to your waist, and you may also get a bigger and perkier butt and nicer quads!  More importantly, you will feel stronger and just awesome!

Don't get me wrong though, I do think the scale is a useful tool to have.  I weigh myself every single day, first thing in the morning.  Then I log them in a spreadsheet with an explanation if it fluctuates more than a pound or so.  I like to keep track of how different types of food I ate the day before affects my body.  I also like to keep track of trends throughout the month.  Sometimes I make graphs with my data points.  I know, I'm a little crazy... lol!  I think the more you learn about how your body reacts, the better you can control what you should be eating and doing to look and feel your best.  But don't let the scale be the determining factor.  Trust me, I know it's hard!  I still get scared when I see the numbers go up, but it's just a battle I think I will likely have for a very long time to come.

Anyway, so there you have it.  You've probably heard all of this before, but I thought sharing pictures might be easier to see, and I hope this helps a little!

Sunday Funday - Special Edition with Lorna Jane Clarkson!

This week has been awesome for a few reasons:

1.  I took Monday off work to bum around so I only had to work 4 days, and tomorrow is MLK day so no work again! (not having to work greatly improves my mood);

2.  Trader Joe's decided to start carrying the cranberry pistachio mini biscotti regularly, it used to be a holiday season item.  It's amazing lol.

3.  My favorite hole in the wall restaurant that closed for a few months due to a fire has re-opened again.  I was pretty much convinced it was gone for good;

4.  I had such a fun time yesterday at the Lorna Jane sponsored blogger event in Santa Monica where I got to meet Lorna Jane Clarkson - the founder of Lorna Jane, whose clothes I love!  She shared with us her story, how she started the business with nothing 25 years ago (she even sold her house!) and her daily routine to stay fit and healthy.  I love hearing stories of people who've made it.  It makes me think that maybe it will happen for me as well (only if I wasn't such a lazy bum lol).  She's very down to earth and relatable, and she looks incredible!  I have pictures as proof... hehehe.  Here she is with me and my friend Dawn!

We wore head to toe Lorna Jane of course.  I wore the Inspire tank with Sunrise bra under it, and Mosaic tights!  I even switched the shoe laces of my purple Nike Free Bionics to orange, so that it would match my outfit!  I kinda like them like that actually.  Might leave it for a while!

We worked out together with Christine Bullock, who was voted LA's hottest trainer.. and she's smoking!  My calves are sore from her dance inspired moves.  I don't do those moves very often, and the Nike Bionics are NOT made for that lol.

Then we had brunch together at the True Food Kitchen at the Santa Monica Promenade, which happens to be right across from the Santa Monica Lorna Jane store.  It's a Dr. Andrew Weil's restaurant based on his anti-inflammatory diet.  I actually think it's a very sensible program, not another gimmicky diet.  But it's hard to believe the food is healthy because they taste so good!  It was 80 degrees and sunny so we sat outside on the patio to get some Vitamin D!  My table shared 4 appetizers in addition to each person's entree - hummus, smoked salmon dip, edamame dumplings, and a giant bowl of fresh raw veggies with 2 types of dip.  For main course, I got the ahi tuna sliders.  Everything was amazing.  I had been to True Food Kitchen for dinner a long time ago, but I think their brunch is definitely better.  Must go back soon!

Oh and they have all kinds of yummy lemonades.  I had a cucumber honey lemonade!  I have a weird thing for green drinks.

Great day!  Followed by some shopping afterwards which I will have to touch on next week.  :)

Now, onto this week's workouts and outfits!  My trainer changed my workouts to full body circuits.  I have 2 circuits that I alternate, 4 times a week total (so 2 each).  I really like them because they are no joke!  But I get annoyed when people use the stations I need when I'm doing something else.  I don't like leaving a towel or something on a machine for an hour just to keep it to myself, and I actually find it really rude when people do that - you don't own the gym!  But some people sit on one machine for like 20 minutes!!!  All I see is them sitting, not actually using it.  I guess they do 1 rep with 20 minute rest or something.  So irritating!  It's not always feasible to ask them if I can jump in, since a lot of machines I need require loading and unloading weight plates and it's just too much work to switch back and forth.  So I just find something else that's comparable.  But the whole process gives me anxiety!!!

Oh a separate note, a guy at the gym told me "wow you have a lot of gym clothes".  Ehhhh... you know it's bad when guys start noticing things like that!  In my experience, unless they are gay, they typically think everything looks the same.  :)

Monday 1/13
What I did:  Circuit 1!  It starts with 4 straight sets of bulgarian split squats, then a 4-set circuit consisting of about 6 different exercises that cover the whole body.  I did my 30 minute cardio session on 15% incline treadmill afterwards.

I love the Tone Racerback for circuit workouts because it's so thin and open!  Super appreciated for sweaty workouts.  As you can see here, it dips pretty low in the back:

I wore the Splits59 Viper Dismount pullover as to and from:

Tuesday 1/14
What I did:  Circuit #2.  It's pretty similar to circuit 1, but more intense!  It starts with hip thrusts and then 4 sets of 6 exercises, then 3 sets of 2 arms exercises, then 3 sets of these body complex things which are a series of exercises done back to back with light weight.  Then I did my cardio session again.

Zobha Biker jacket as to and from:

Wednesday 1/15 - Rest day!  I wore my new Express sweater to work - the Bateau Neck Sheer Stripe sweater.  I was going to exchange the XS for a S, but I decided to just keep it.  I wore a red Express tank under, and Express Wide Waistband Editor pants in black too.  All Express!

Thursday 1/16
What I did:  Circuit 1 again, followed by cardio.

What I wore:  The new Splits59 Danica Liquid Cheetah tank in scarlet!  Omg love it!!!  I put some Lululemon bra cups in between the outside of the tank and the built in bra layer, since it doesn't have room for cup inserts.  They stayed perfectly in place!  I wore Lululemon Power Vinyasa crop on the bottom because I thought what would be better than lace and cheetah print?  :)  Black Nike Free Bionics.

White Lululemon Swiftly LS as to and from.  I love this swiftly over bright colored tanks, but I am normally afraid of doing so over Lululemon's own tanks since you never know when they might start bleeding!  Lol.  I have confidence in Splits59 products because they do quality control and won't sell stuff that bleed.

I also wore another Express outfit to work on the same day!  I really love wearing Express to work since they are always comfortable, fit well, and cheap lol.  I don't want to spend lots of money on work clothes because all I do is sit in them.

I wore this older top - cross-over pleat shell top with the new High Waist Pintucked pencil skirt in heathered gray, and Ivanka Trump Pinkish pumps that match the shirt perfectly!

Friday 1/17
What I did:  Circuit 2 again for the final weight workout of the week!  Then my cardio session again as well to finish that up too.

What I wore:  Lole Spiral tank with Roxy Get Faster crop that I got from the Fitness Magazine blogger event back in October.  I guess I forgot I had them!  First time wearing them, they were actually quite nice!  I like the dark charcoal color.

Saturday 1/18 - Lorna Jane blogger event so I worked out with Christine!  Outfit posted above already.  :)

Sunday 1/19
What I did:  I went back to pilates class for the first time in forever!  I better start going way more often before my classes expire!  It was a great class too!

What I wore:  Lululemon Flow and Go tank in white, with Yogasmoga Run Jump 'n Play crop, and my new wedge sneakers I haven't had a chance to write about yet.  Will do that next week!

Splits59 colorblock jacket as to and from because I just heart this jacket so much:

My pilates studio is in Beverly Hills, so I went to the Nespresso flagship boutique afterwards.  It's actually like 2 stores down from Lululemon.  I think Nespresso is smart for copying the Apple concept.  They have a really swanky looking coffee shop in the front of the store where you can get breakfast, brunch, desserts, and of course espresso/coffee drinks.  In the back of the store they do espresso tastings and you can test out different espresso machines they sell.  How cute.  I would never buy an espresso machine, so I just go there for the food lol.  I had a turkey brie sandwich with this amazing tomato bisque in a shot glass.  Greek yogurt parfait, and a latte with a caramel flavored espresso.

Now that's a good way to start a beautiful Sunday!  Then tomorrow will be another lazy day (after working out of course!) of bumming around!  Happy long weekend everyone!
