Korean Skincare Brand - Skin Food

I have been using products from this Korean brand called Skin Food for a while now.  They have been around in Korea for a long time, but they don't have many stores in the US.  There is one in LA, however.  Not very close to me, but not too far.  You can also buy on Amazon.  But I walked into the store a couple months ago when I was in the area, since it's always better to look at something in person before buying.  Korean beauty products are supposed to be cream of the crop right?  I had to give it a shot especially after reading so many positive reviews online, and the price seems so reasonable!

Their products are all food based.  Their moto is that good food for the health is also good food for the skin.  If you browse their website, you can find the different product lines they carry.  Although their website is kind of funky to navigate.  When I went into the store, I was looking for lightweight lotion.  So the sales girl recommended the Peach Sake Pore Serum, which is supposed to lessen the appearance of pores.  If you are not familiar with Korean beauty products, the order for cleansing your face goes like this:  face wash --> toner --> emulsion --> serum.

I gotta say, as soon as I used this serum, I was immediately very happy with it!  Not only does it smell amazing, it feels so different from any other moisturizer I've used.  It comes in a glass bottle with a pump, and when you pump out the serum, it looks just like any normal lightweight lotion.  But once you put it on your face, it transforms your skin immediately.  I don't know how to explain it, but when you touch your face, it feels kind of velvety and matte.  The skin tone also looks more even.  It almost looks like you put on a very thin layer of foundation - so strange... but cool!  It's very lightweight though.  I have combination skin, and live in a warm climate, so I didn't want something heavy.  But if you have dryer skin, you would probably want to use the emulsion beforehand.

I actually liked the serum so much that I bought the Skin Food Peach Sake Pore Toner from the same line on Amazon a week later.  So I've been using the two products together.  The toner also comes in a nice glass bottle.  It is a very gentle toner, and it smells just as amazing as the serum.  It's not like the regular toner you can get here which are high in alcohol content and dry out your skin immediately.  This one soothes and it feels really nice after using it.  I usually let my skin chill for a minute or two after applying this toner, then I put on the serum.

When I was at the store, I also thought I'd try the Peach Sake Pore BB Cream since it's only $10 or so, and Koreans created BB cream after all!  I've been using it everyday as well.  It comes in two colors, #1 (light) and #2 (natural).  I got #2 and it is like the perfect match for my skin.  I am very impressed with this BB cream.  I've used so many different ones, but this one is definitely my favorite!  It goes on very light yet has great coverage.  I don't even know how that's possible.  But when I put this on, it looks so natural and yet all the flaws are gone.  My face also doesn't get shiny by the end of the day, like some BB creams do to it.  I guess this is how the real BB cream is supposed to be.  To think that Sephora sells so many inferior BB creams that are 3 to 6 times the price of this one!  I love Sephora, but I won't be buying another BB cream from them lol.

When I was at the store, I also got a cleanser - the Skin Food Egg White Pore Foam Face Wash.  It's also supposed to minimize your pores.  I don't know if I'm that happy with this one.  It foams really well so a little goes a loooong way.  I'm serious, this thing will last me 5 years at this rate.  But it makes my face feel tight after using it, and I don't think it cleanses that well because I still see some makeup on my cotton pad when I apply toner after washing.  People seem to like it based on the Amazon reviews though.  I think it's just ok.

Lastly, when I was at the store I bought one of their most popular products - the Skin Food Black Sugar Mask.  I really really like this one!  It's a scrub and a mask in one.  After you wash your face (while it's still wet), you just slab this stuff on all over.  Rub gently so the black sugar particles scrub your face (add more water if it feels too harsh).  Then you leave it on for like 15 minutes and then rinse.  When you leave it on, it kind of looks like you put honey all over your face.  A weird look indeed, but my face feels soooo nice afterwards!  And the next day when I wake up, it looks like I already have makeup on!  It's very gentle and smells good too - almost good enough to eat lol.  You would want to use it everyday, but they tell you to not use it more than once a week.

The photo above is definitely a darker and more vibrant color than it is in person - this is how mine looks:

Speaking of masks, I mentioned in my last Sephora post about the Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask that I bought recently.  I have been using this mud mask along with the Skin Food sugar scrub.  I alternate them every 3-4 days.  The Peter Thomas mask is very different.  It is probably more similar to the Glamglow Supermud than the Skin Food mask.

It is like the blackest black:

And similar to Glamglow Supermud, it makes your face tingle after you put it on.  But it does not harden and pull on your face like Glamglow does.  It also doesn't show the "dirt" that it pulls out.  It just looks like black gelatin on your face.  It's hard to clean off too.  You have to use a wet towel to remove it.  Then your towel gets all black and you have to wash it every time.  Every time after I've taken it off, I actually feel like I've had a mini peel or something because my face gets slightly red.  So it leads me to believe that this is a very strong product, even though it doesn't feel like it when you first put it on.  I do feel like my pores are cleaner after using it.  But I don't think it has as great results as what I expected.

It's a lot better value than Glamglow though - it is a much bigger tub than Glamglow, but costs less.  Glamglow is 1.2 oz for $69, and this Peter Thomas mud mask is 5 oz for $58.  Here's the difference in size as well as color of the 2 products:

I actually took a picture of all 3 masks together.  Skin Food is still the best price - 100g (3.5 oz) for $10 lol.  But of course it's quite a different product from the other two:

I think that it's safe to say that I am sold to this Skin Food brand!  Such affordable prices for products that work extremely well.  There's really nothing else I can ask for!  Koreans really do know what they are doing when it comes to beauty products!

    1. Try it! If it doesn't work, it's not a big financial set back. But I hope it does! =)

  2. I'm tempted to give them a try too. Can I ask what your foundation shade is? I'm interested in trying the BB cream but I'm not sure if Natural would be the right shade. I have light-medium yellow undertoned skin, so a lot of Asian products work well for me. I am MAC NC25 or Makeup Forever 120 and currently use Bobbi Brown BB cream in Fair. Any thoughts? Thanks!

    1. Hi Deb! Sounds like #2 is your shade. It's been forever since I've used MAC foundation, so I don't even remember what I used there. But my current Makeup Forever Duo Mat Powder Foundation is 201- Ivory. Hope this helps! =)

  3. I noticed that skinfood has two different bb creams- the mushroom one and the peak sake. Any idea how the formulations differ? Thanks! Love your blog!

    1. I think they have quite a few different BB creams actually. I've only tried the peach sake so far. If you go on their website, you can browse all the products. I found the mushroom BB cream here: http://eng.theskinfood.com/goods/goodsDetail.do?optnGoodsCd=1000008437

I think it just depends on what skin type you have and what you are trying to achieve. They have sooooo many different products, it is kind of overwhelming!
